Multiplayer Thragtusk, Donate, Concede?

Asked by WillowtheCouncil 4 years ago

In a multiplayer game, I hypothetically Donate a Thragtusk to player 2. I concede after, which exiles my Thragtusk. Does player 2 make a 3/3 token?

Thragtusk leaves the game, it isn't exiled. Thragtusk's ability only triggers of changing zones, since Thragtusk did not change zones, it's ability does not trigger, similar to if it phased out.

@Neotrup I've been thinking about that as well, but Thragtusk's ability is a 'leaves the battlefield' trigger, so it may actually happen? The relevant rules section is 800.4. and its subsections and the OP actually pulled off an example I couldn't really match with any of these.

If the conceding player controlled it, it would be easy to resolve, but in this case...

I'm leaning towards the trigger triggering, but honestly not sure.

Compare 603.6c Leaves-the-battlefield abilities trigger when a permanent moves from the battlefield to another zone, or when a phased-in permanent leaves the game because its owner leaves the game. These are written as, but aren’t limited to, “When [this object] leaves the battlefield, . . .

sergiodelrio: That's a good find. I wasn't aware of the bolded text in the rule you quote. That means Thragtusk's ability does trigger, since "leaves the battlefield" abilities look back in time to the last moment the object was on the battlefield to determine if and how they trigger. Because Thragtusk's controller would control the triggered ability as well, that means the trigger still gets put onto the stack instead of ceasing to exist.

As Rhadamanthus said, sergiodelrio did find the relevant rule. I was only going off of the rules for leaving the game, which make it clear that the zone doesn't actually change, and was unaware that the rules for zone changes do address that leaving a game can be a cause of triggering. I felt I should chime in incase you hadn't selected an answer due to not having a consensus. Thragtusk would trigger off of leaving the game, even though it's zone doesn't change.
