Mirage Mystical Tutor says I can get a mana source?
Asked by SniperFrog 11 years ago
I noticed today that my Mystical Tutor says I can tutor up a land source, but the rest of them only say Instant or sorcery. Mine is from Mirage, BTW.

I see. Thank you very much. I just figured I could tutor up lands, but I shouldve known better.

Always look to the text on gatherer for the final ruling on what a card can do. There are sometimes cards with errors, or just older versions of wording that would have much different effects if they went by the literal printing. (for example, the russian printing of Burden of Guilt says to (tap) the enchantment rather than to pay (1).

"Search your library for an instant or sorcery card and reveal that card. Shuffle your library, then put the card on top of it."
This is what the spell does regardless of what is printed on your card. Also 'Mana Source' and 'Land Source' aren't the same thing. It referred to things like Dark Ritual which, also in Mirage, was printed as a 'Mana Source' and not as an instant.
605.5b A spell can never be a mana ability, even if it could put mana into a player's mana pool when it resolves. It's cast and resolves just like any other spell. Some older cards were printed with the card type "mana source"; these cards have received errata in the Oracle card reference and are now instants.
