Marchesa, the Black Rose with graveyard hate
Asked by the_potatoless_one 10 years ago
My friend had Marchesa, the Black Rose and another creature with a +1/+1 counter on it in play and I have a Mimic Vat in play. His creature with a +1/+1 counter on it died (Marchesa was in the game) and when it went on the graveyard I imprinted it onto Mimic Vat. 1) Will the creature that I imprinted, return onto the battlefield even though it has been exile? 2) If so, will i have a copy of it imprinted under my Mimic Vat?

Link all cards in your question. There's a formatting guide at the bottom of the page.

That creature will not return to the battlefield, see:
603.7c A delayed triggered ability that refers to a particular object still affects it even if the object changes characteristics. However, if that object is no longer in the zone its expected to be in at the time the delayed triggered ability resolves, the ability wont affect it. (Note that if that object left that zone and then returned, its a new object and thus wont be affected. See rule 400.7.)
Example: An ability that reads Exile this creature at the beginning of the next end step will exile the permanent even if its no longer a creature during the next end step. However, it wont do anything if the permanent left the battlefield before then.
Marchesa's ability will not "track" the card beyond what is explicitly mentioned in the triggered effect. Marchesa tracks it to the graveyard, but once it leaves the graveyard she loses it. The card stays under Mimic Vat until you imprint something new on to it. Even if it goes back to the graveyard before the ability resolves it's treated as a new object and will not come back.
