Marchesa the Black Rose question

Asked by phc 10 years ago

Marchesa's third ability: Whenever a creature you control with a +1/+1 counter on it dies, return that card to the battlefield under your control at the beginning of the next end step.

Does this ability apply to her as well? For example if she had a +1/+1 counter on her and someone threw down a wrath would I get her back at the beginning of the next end step?

Marchesa, the Black Rose

Short answer, Yes.

Longer answer: Marchesa's third ability looks for any "creature that you control with a +1/+1 counter". Since Marchesa IS a creature you control, as long as she has a +1/+1 counter on her when she dies (goes from the battlefield to the graveyard), she will return to the battlefield at the next end step.

The reason she works on herself is that "dies" triggers trigger from the battlefield and use information from the last moment the card was on the battlefield to determine if and how they trigger. At the last moment Marchesa was on the battlefield, she was a creature you controlled and her ability still existed, so she triggers. This is what allows any creature with a "dies" ability (Black Cat , etc.) to work at all.
