Malignus

Xenagos, God of Revels

If I double Malignus 's P/T do I deal damage = to your life total when damage step happens? Or does Malignus 's power change back to half your life during state based effects before then?

Short Answer: No, you will effectively have a Malignus who is (OppLife/2)+Power.at.resolution.of.Xenagod.Ability P/T

Longer answer: Due to the way layering work the two ability don't interact on the exact same layer and won't affect each other.
Both of the ability are applied to the layer 7 which is define: Power- and/or toughness-changing effects are applied.

This layer is divided in sublayer and each of those are applied in order:
Layer 7a: Effects from characteristic-defining abilities that define power and/or toughness are applied.
Layer 7b: Effects that set power and/or toughness to a specific number or value are applied.
Layer 7c: Effects that modify power and/or toughness (but dont set power and/or toughness to a specific number or value) are applied.
Layer 7d: Power and/or toughness changes from counters are applied.
Layer 7e: Effects that switch a creatures power and toughness are applied. Such effects take the value of power and apply it to the creatures toughness, and take the value of toughness and apply it to the creatures power.

The Static ability from Malignus is a "characteristic-defining ability" and will be applied first on the Layer 7a and won't take in consideration anything that would be applied on layers that follow. The triggered ability from Xenagos, God of Revels is an "effect that modify power and/or toughness" and is applied in Layer 7d.

So at the beginning of your combat step you the ability from Xenagos, God of Revels will trigger, you then need to choose a legal target for it. The ability is then placed on the stack and when it finally resolve it will take in consideration Malignus current Power for the ability. If later on the same turn, your opponents lost or gained some life, Malignus P/T will be affected by it but the pump he recieved from Xenagos, God of Revels won't change.

If you're curious of how layering work more deeply I will recommend you to read section 613 from the Magic: The Gathering Comprehensive Rules book.

Thank you so much. What an informative answer. It is exactly what I was looking for.

This is how we were playing it, but we got to talking, and questioning things. Layering seems interesting to me. I will need to look in to it more.
