Mairsil, the pretender and pack rat as protection

Asked by griz024 7 years ago

If Mairsil, the Pretender has Pack Rat "in the cage" (aka exiled with a cage counter on it) can you use Pack Rat's ability in response to targeted removal to "protect" mairsil?

By that i mean, make a token copy of mairsil and keep said token copy that is not being targeted by the removal spell/ability instead of the original version to fizzle it?

Tyvm for any replies in advance

Whenever an ability is self-referencing, it can be read as "discard a card: create a copy of [this card]."

Because of this, if Mairsil has the ability because it caged Pack Rat, you may activate the ability to create a copy of Mairsil. The legend rule will apply and you'll have to put one into your graveyard, (or back to command zone).
