Lifelink and Lifelink-like affects.

Asked by xoxoAlu 9 years ago

I read on gatherer that Mourning Thrull and Lifelink stack to grant double life gain, one being a static affect, and the thrull having an activated ability. If the wording is essentially the same, are they different only because they didn't name the ability on the Thrull? Also, does this mean an enchantment, like Armadillo Cloak, would stack with those two as well?Thank you!

Mourning Thrull doesn't have any activated abilities. It has a triggered ability.

When lifelink was finally keyworded, most of the cards with the "whenever ~ deals damage, you gain that much life" ability received errata to instead have lifelink. Some did not. I don't know why Mourning Thrull did not, but Armadillo Cloak did not because there's a chance you could enchant someone else's creature and still gain life from its damage because you control Armadillo Cloak (the ability is "lives on" Armadillo Cloak rather than the creature, so whoever controls Armadillo Cloak controls the ability).

Instances of "Whenever ~ deals damage, you gain that much life" stack because they're separate triggered abilities. They also stack with lifelink. However, multiple instances of lifelink are redundant.

So let's say you have Mourning Thrull enchanted with Lifelink and Armadillo Cloak. You'll gain 1 life simultaneously with Mourning Thrull's damage (that's from lifelink), and you'll get two triggered abilities (one from Mourning Thrull and one from Armadillo Cloak) that will each give you 1 life for a total of 3.

Just wanted to say that in Epoch's example, you will get 9 life, because Mourning Thrull is a 3/3 thanks to Armadillo Cloak.

Right, totally forgot about the other buff. Good catch.
