Life, Death, and the stack

They way I understand it - once someone's life drops to 0, they immediately lose and the stack doesn't matter.

But recently, i got in an argument with someone and we didn't have a judge around to solve it.

If i swing in for your remaining 2 life with a creature and in response you Sphinx's Revelation for 10, but in response to THAT, I Magma Jet you for 2, wouldn't that mean that before Sphinx resolves your life hits 0, you die, and the stack goes into nothingness?

Yes and no, when the life hits 0, the player loses the game as a state based action. So this is what happens. Ok stack is from bottom to top, Sphinx's Revelation then Magma Jet , jet resolves dealing 2 damage to the player. his life hits zero, now before the next item on the stack goes to resolve, state based actions are checked, the player at 0 loses the game. His spells on the stack cease to exist (in a multiplayer game this is relevant)..

104.3b. If a players life total is 0 or less, he or she loses the game the next time a player would receive priority. (This is a state-based action. See rule 704.)
