Liege Buff Interaction

Asked by smelly318 12 years ago

A buddy of mine asked me this and I couldn't give him a complete answer.

Say I am playing a 3/3 dual colored creature with a liege of those 2 colors in play (other creatures you control get +2/+2 if they share the colors of the liege, you get my point). Can the creature coming into play get targeted and destroyed by a Lightning Bolt before it receives the +2/+2 bonus?

I believe that regardless of when the Lightning Bolt can be played, the creature will also receive the +2/+2 and not die.

For the sake of example, let's say you control Wilt-Leaf Liege and a Watchwolf .

Static buffs always apply. Creatures are subject to static buffs as they enter the battlefield. Watchwolf will ETB as a 5/5.

You are correct. The liege's ability is called an anthem ability. It is applied immediately so the creature would get +2/+2 becoming a 5/5 then take 3 damage from Lightning Bolt . So it can only take two more damage this turn before it dies
