Level Counters
Asked by Legendinc 13 years ago
A friend of mine said that leveling a level creature like Student of Warfare is an activated ability, and thus affected by summoning sickness, which means i couldn't level the Student of Warfare up counters.
for clarification purposes, i can use abilities of creatures whenever so long as its not an ability which needs the creature to tap, correct?
(or unless stated, like if the ability has "Use this ability only when you would play a sorcery" or "Use this ability only during your upkeep")

I just want to add a point of clarification: like the quoted rule says, summoning sickness only affects attacking and the use of activated abilities on that card with the tap symbol in the cost. Tapping creatures is actually part of the cost of Grand Architect 's mana ability, but you're allowed to use summoning-sick creatures to pay that cost (including the Architect, himself) because it doesn't use the tap symbol.

Summoning Sickness only prevents a creature from using an ability that requires it to tap. This includes attacking, because being able to tap is a precondition for being a legal blocker.
302.6. A creatures activated ability with the tap symbol or the untap symbol in its activation cost cant be activated unless the creature has been under its controllers control continuously since his or her most recent turn began. A creature cant attack unless it has been under its controllers control continuously since his or her most recent turn began. This rule is informally called the summoning sickness rule.
However, you can still activate abilities that do not require tapping. Level up of Student of Warfare is one such example. Also, abilities that tap a creature on resolution can still target a creature with summoning sickness. Examples are Grand Architect and Tumble Magnet .
