Kolaghan's Command and Wilt-Leaf Liege

Asked by sircalist 9 years ago

Hello.

Suppose I have a 2/2 white creature on the battlefield and Wilt-Leaf Liege in my hand. My opponent casts Kolaghan's Command and chooses to make me discard a card and deal 2 damages to my creature. I discard Wilt-Leaf Liege. Does my creature survive?

I think it survives because, as Kolaghan's command resolves, I first discard Wilt-Leaf Liege. It goes to the battlefield instead of graveyard due to its replacement effect, and its countinuous effect makes my other creature a 3/3, than Kolaghan's command deals 2 damages.

Is it correct?

Yes, but even if the events happened in the opposite order your creature would still live.

A creature being destroyed for having lethal damage marked against its toughness is one of the game's "state based actions". The important thing about SBAs is that they're checked right before each time a player would get priority. In this example that would be after Kolaghan's Command is completely finished resolving. At that time your creature is a 3/3 with 2 damage marked on it, so it's fine regardless of whether the discard or damage happened first.

Thank you, that's exactly what I thought.
