Kogla, the Titan Ape targeting question

Asked by Propixels 1 year ago

My opponent plays Kogla and it enters triggering its ETB effect to fight a creature they don't control. They target my creature and before the ability resolves I take control of Kogla, is my creature still a legal target for the ETB?

My main reasoning is because the target is specifically a creature the controller does not control. Is that only when choosing a target for the ETB or also on resolution of the ability?

You can link cards by enclosing the card name in double brackets.

Kogla, the Titan Ape

Targeting legality is checked both when a spell or ability goes on the stack and when it resolves. However; this doesn't lead to your creature being an invalid target. The "you" in abilities refers to the controller of the ability. Kolga changing control doesn't also change control of the ability. Your opponent will still control the ETB despite no longer controlling Kogla, and the target will still be valid.
