Kill Switch + Unwinding Clock rulling?
Asked by Lazarus369 11 years ago
If i play a Kill Switch , plus an Unwinding Clock and a Mycosynth Lattice , all that does is permanently tap the entire board right? Provided I pay the 2 to retap Kill Switch at their upkeep each turn. Im not missing some way to stack the triggers so that I can have my things untap while keeping their cards tapped am I?
the gatherer rullings for Unwinding Clock
states
6/1/2011 Those artifacts untap at the same time as the active player's permanents. You have no choice about what untaps and can't choose to not untap an artifact you control.
from my understanding, there is no stacking of untap triggers, all items that are not prevented from untapping occur at the same time, so your opponents permanents would not untap since Kill Switch
prevents them while it is tapped, and it is tapped at the time the untapping is suppose to occur.

Copied from a Level 3 judge on another site:
"On the opponent's untap step, you untap all your artifacts. Kill Switch only stops artifacts from untapping during their controllers' untap steps, and Unwinding Clock is telling you to untap during another player's untap step.
The opponent's artifacts will not untap, because at the moment the turn based action is performed, those permanents can't be untapped due to Kill Switch being tapped as the instruction begins to be performed. "

Ok, so Im not entirely clear. Dreno33 i get what your saying, without the Unwinding Clock Im good to go. But if I do happen to have it, if I understand what pskinn01 is saying, I would still get to untap my stuff and they would not, because at the untap step Kill Switch is still tapped, preventing them from doing anything?

@Dreno33: The untap phase is one step, untap everything at the same time.
502.2. Second, the active player determines which permanents he or she controls will untap. Then he or she untaps them all simultaneously. This turn-based action doesnt use the stack. Normally, all of a players permanents untap, but effects can keep one or more of a players permanents from untapping. #
since the ruling for Unwinding Clock
states that it happens at the same time, then the opponet does not get to untap his permanents.

Ok thank you, I am sorry I misinformed you. Cool combo, although hard to pull off, haha.

Actually, when Unwinding Clock untaps your Kill Switch on their untap step, they get to untap their stuff as well because you are still in the untap phase.
I would recommend taking out Unwinding Clock from this trifecta. Then you will have the desired board lock you wish.
Basically, untap Kill Switch as normal on your untap step, thus untagging all of your permanents as usual.
Then tap it at the end of your turn to lock the entire board down.
Your next untap step comes and you let Kill Switch untap once again with your permanents.
I hope that helps(:
