Kaalia of the Vast throwing Withengar Unbound into play

Asked by Triguner187 13 years ago

Hi everyone I just recently played a casual game of EDH with a few friends, one of which was playing Kaalia as the commander.Turn five he attacked and used her ability to play Withengar Unbound. The problem I saw with this was that you can not play him until he is transformed from Elbrus, the Binding Blade. Any way I got him with a GFTT, but am I wrong can you play Withengar using Kaalia's ability before you transform the blade? Thanks in advance to anyone who helps out also sorry for long post.

i believe that withengar is an artifact UNLESS it's transformed ON the battlefield

The only time a double sided card can be its moon side(back side) is when it is on the battlefield. In all other zones it exists only as the front face(the one with the sun and the mana cost)

Thanks guys that is exactly how i saw it. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't mistaken and being a jerk by accusing him of a misplay.

Both previous answers are correct. To clarify:

When a double-faced card (DFC) is in any zone other than the battlefield, it has only the properties of the front face (the one with the mana cost and sun). Therefore, when is in your opponent's hand, it is ONLY Elbrus. This means it is not a Demon, Angel, or Dragon card, and therefore Kaalia of the VastMTG Card: Kaalia of the Vast's ability can't be used to put it into play.
