Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur

Asked by cryptichorror 13 years ago

This came up the other night, and I thought I knew the answer, but another player made me question it. When Jin-Gitaxias, Core AugurMTG Card: Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur is in play, does it's controller draw the 7 cards before or after his discard step? I said before, which would cause the controller to end their turn with 7 cards. He said you draw the 7 cards after discarding down to your hand size.

The cleanup step follows the end step, thus they will have to discard after drawing seven.

What happens to the opponent's next turn? At their draw step, do they get to draw (having to discard their hand at the end of turn?) or does the card get discarded straight to the graveyard (as soon as they draw it)?

onthestack, When you have a 'maximum hand-size' (usually 7, in this case opponents get 0) you can hold any number of cards during your turn, or even on another player's turn. However, when you reach your Clean up step, you must always discard down to your maximum hand size.

And when the player who does NOT control Jin-Gitaxias, Core AugurMTG Card: Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur adds in something like, Venser's JournalMTG Card: Venser's Journal, it would override the effects of Jin-Gitaxias, Core AugurMTG Card: Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur, correct?

I believe that's correct, as they're both static effects, you go by the time stamp of which is most recent. However, it would make the opposite true as well, and if some one that didn't control Jin, played a Venser's JournalMTG Card: Venser's Journal and the following turn you played Jin-Gitaxias, Core AugurMTG Card: Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur, Jin's effect would supersede.

@djgunn Are you sure? I see that as possible, but Venser's JournalMTG Card: Venser's Journal is still in effect. It seems like it would just be infinity minus 7 (still infinity).

Cryptichorror is correct in this final statement. Venser's journal takes away the maximum hand size limit entirely. Jin-Gitaxias merely decreases the maximum hand size. If however the Jin-Gitaxias put on a specific hand size (Ie zero) then this would be a different story with much more confusion and headaches.

Yeah, my bad. I didn't re-read Jin again as the 'reduces by seven'. You're both totally right. I was thinking 'reduces to zero'. Was in a hurry to get out to a gig when I posted that last answer, sorry for the lapse in judgment.
