jace's phantasm and timing
Asked by Nightstlkr 11 years ago
if player A has Jace's Phantasm on the battlefield and player B has 9 cards in graveyard; how would the scenario of casting Shock on the Jace's Phantasm work? does the phantasm take 2 damage, die, then shock hits the graveyard, or does shock hit the graveyard before.
(obvious) rules i found on this, but I didnt see anything that specified on what happens first.
704.5g If a creature has toughness greater than 0, and the total damage marked on it is greater than or equal to its toughness, that creature has been dealt lethal damage and is destroyed. Regeneration can replace this event.
608.2k As the final part of an instant or sorcery spells resolution, the spell is put into its owners graveyard. As the final part of an abilitys resolution, the ability is removed from the stack and ceases to exist.

The rules that round this out have to do with the relationship between priority and State Based Actions (SBAs). Destroying a creature with lethal damage is an SBA, and SBAs are checked right before a player would get priority. After a spell or ability is finished resolving, the active player gets priority. This means that because of the rule 608.2k you found, Shock is already in the graveyard when SBAs would be checked. At that time Jace's Phantasm is a 5/5 with 2 damage marked so there's no reason to destroy it for lethal damage.
