Is trample+deathtouch insta kill with damage still going through?

Asked by ftbj100 9 years ago

While looking up ideas for a mono green deck, I read online that if Nylea, God of the Hunt and Bow of Nylea are out at the same time, your creatures would kill any of the opponents creatures in 1 damage then the rest goes through as trample. For example, if a 5/5 attacked and was blocked by a 7/7, the 7/7 would die after 1 damage and the defender would take 4 damage in trample. This doesn't sound very right, but i just want to confirm it

Yes you can. For trample damage each creature blocking the attacking creature must be dealt lethal damage in order to trample the damage to the player. So yes you can assign 1 to the 7/7 and then 4 to the player.

Basically, when determining how much damage can "trample through", you must make sure that all blockers have been assigned lethal damage. Normally, lethal damage is equal or more than the creature's toughness. However, deathtouch makes it that even 1 point of damage from the source with deathtouch is lethal. Therefore, only 1 point of damage needs to be assigned here and the rest can be assigned to the defending player.

wait so the attacking creature wouldn't die at all? i thought that all of a creatures power was dealt at one time (unless it had double strike)

The attacking creature would die, Unless the attacking creature had first/double strike.

We didn't ever say anything about the attacking creature not dying. We merely didn't meantion it because it was irrelevant to the main question.
