Is morph an activated ability that is effected by Training Grounds?
Asked by SandyDufresne 13 years ago
I just wanted to clarify this before I start a morph Commander deck. Thanks in advance. If I play Akroma, Angel of Fury face down for 3, would her morph cost be 3R and a colorless if I had Training Grounds on the battlefield or would it still be 3R and 3 colorless?

Morphing a creature is not an activated ability, it is a special action that doesn't use the stack. Training Grounds will not affect the cost of morph, and your Akroma will cost 3RRR to flip as usual.
702.34d. If you have priority, you may turn a face-down permanent you control face up. This is a special action; it doesn't use the stack (see rule 115). (snipped)

The best way to know if an ability is activated is to check the way it's written. Activated abilities are always written as "Cost" : "Effect", either directly on the card or in the rules for a keyword ability (Equip is an example of this). Because morph isn't written this way, it's not an activated ability. Like BrightGreenLine says, paying a morph cost and flipping a creature face-up is a special action.
