Is it possible to have two of the same creature type?

Asked by peppyhare 13 years ago

For example, would selecting construct on Adaptive Automaton cause it to become an artifact creature- construct construct or is there a rule preventing this from happening?

Huh?

That would just mean it is what it is. A construct is a construct is a construct.

You can certainly select that as a creature type if you want, and then all other constructs would profit.

Your Adaptive Automaton would have the type line "Artifact Creature - Construct". Other Construct creatures you control will get +1/+1 from its ability (it will not count itself in the ability).

Since Automaton says "in addition to its other types", choosing a type that it already is will cause it to remain what it is. Think of it this way: it can't be X in addition to X, it will just be X. However, it can be X in addition to Y, so it will be X + Y.

But, since you did still choose a creature type, Automaton will still give other creatures of that type +1/+1. It doesn't care if it's the same type as something it already is, because it doesn't specify any restrictions.

Though your answer certainly explains the situation more thoroughly, I still prefer my own answer.

It is what it is.

Let's have fun.

@theemptyquiver: Lol. Just lol.

@peppyhare: Why would you even want to have that effect? Was there a reason for this question? It reminds me of a few other pointless things you could do, such as Cryptoplasm becoming a copy of another Cryptoplasm , thus giving it the upkeep ability twice - pointless, but fun in a way ;)
