Is Heartless Hidetsugu pretty broken in EDH?

Asked by Dreno33 12 years ago

Heartless Hidetsugu as a commander seems like total crap... Instant Commander damage just from tapping. And nearly full Rq. Damage at that....

Nope nope, commander damage only comes from COMBAT damage; you have to attack and deal damage that way.

this would be better suited in the forums. MTG Q&A is for rules-related questions only.

It's in the official commander rules that commander damage has to be combat damage. Otherwise this guy would likely be on the ban-list. I felt the same way when I first saw him.

Commander damage is ONLY combat damage. I thought The same as you originally, however I checked the rules and found out.

He could be with Furnace of Rath . Just make sure you have more life than your opponents when you use it.

@Heartpiercer: Having more life won't do anything. The ability does damage to each individual player based on each individual life total. With a damage doubler in play, you'd need to have an odd number of life to survive because the ability rounds down.

I think that's what I meant but thanks for clarifying.
