Interaction of Auras and Banishing Light

Asked by fadetoblack1183 9 years ago

I recently used Banishing Light on Madcap Skills against a Naya Hexproof deck. That player later blew up the Banishing Light and then said he could reattach the Aura to any creature. I didn't feel this was right, but had no way to put into words why. The judge said it was allowed. Looking for more explanation why this is allowed, or if it is even legal.

The judge handled it correctly. Auras that enter the battlefield besides as a spell are kind of weird, and have some strange interactions. Since they simply enter attached to something, they don't target like a spell, and can get around targeting restrictions like Shroud or Hexproof. I don't blame you for thinking it's a bit weird, because it is.

Here's the exact rule you're looking for:

  • 303.4f If an Aura is entering the battlefield under a players control by any means other than by resolving as an Aura spell, and the effect putting it onto the battlefield doesnt specify the object or player the Aura will enchant, that player chooses what it will enchant as the Aura enters the battlefield. The player must choose a legal object or player according to the Auras enchant ability and any other applicable effects.

Auras only target as spells. If an Aura is put onto the battlefield through a means other than resolving as a spell, it won't have a target, and it can be attached to any legally-enchantable object that exists as the Aura is being put onto the battlefield.

In this case, the Naya Hexproof player must reattach Madcap Skills to any creature on the battlefield, but that player chooses the creature. He can choose the same creature that Madcap Skills originally enchanted, or he can choose another.
