Interaction between Grip of the Roil and Thermo-Alchemist

Asked by Hwedlor 7 years ago

Scenario:

I have a Thermo-Alchemist untapped on the battlefield.
My opponent casts Grip of the Roil to tap my Thermo-Alchemist on his turn. I respond and tap my Thermo-Alchemist to do 1 point of damage to my opponent. At the end of my opponents turn I cast Fiery Temper and do 3 points of damage to my opponent and untaps my Thermo-Alchemist.

At my upkeep Grip of the Roil triggers. Does this retap my Thermo-Alchemist?

No. Grip of the Roil does not create a delayed-triggered ability, meaning nothing will trigger from it later. All it does is prevent your Thermo-Alchemist from untapping if it happens to be tapped during your next untap step after the Grip resolves.

The way to tell if an instant or sorcery (or any card type, but most often with these two) creates a delayed-trigger ability is to look for a phrase that generally starts a new line of text on the card, but will almost always start with "At the beginning/end of some player's next step/phase"

Hope this helps!

Thank you metalmagic

What is I take that scenario 1 step further and re-tap my Thermo-Alchemist after casting the Fiery Temper spell causing him to retap.

This would have him tapped at upkeep.

In that instance, Hwedlor, your alchemist WOULD stay tapped at your untap step, but you can of course untap it with any instant or sorcery during your or your opponent's turn. Just a side note, it is indeed your untap step that abilities and spells like Grip of the Roil check to keep permanents tapped, not your upkeep. If they checked then, it would be too late as everything will have already untapped since the untap step is the first part of any turn.

After it checks and keeps tapped, I can then cast a instant to untap during my turn, yes?

To reiterate, Grip of the Roil only stops things from untapping as part of the turn-based-action of untapping all your permanents during your untap step at the beginning of your turn.

Any time you cast an instant or sorcery Thermo-Alchemist will untap due to it's own triggered ability.
