Infect: does it damage both players AND creatures?

Asked by Tom_Corbett 11 years ago

Hi there,

Hypothetical:If I attack with Ichorclaw Myr and my opponent chooses to block with Arbor Elf , does Myr:

a) get +2/+2 for blocking? AND
b) kill the Elf by dealing -3/-3 poison counters? AND
c) deal 3 poison counters to opponent?

Conversely if my opponent does not choose to block with the Elf, does Myr:
a) still kill the Elf by dealing -1/-1 poison counter? ORb) just deals 1 poison counter to opponent?

Thanks!

You're misunderstanding how infect works.

Infect says that it deals damage to creatures in the form of -1/-1 counters, and to players in the form of poison counters. It still follows all the normal rules for damage other than that.

If an Ichorclaw Myr is blocked by the Arbor Elf , it will get +2/+2 until end of turn. It will deal 3 damage to Arbor Elf which will take the form of three -1/-1 counters, and the Arbor elf will deal 1 damage to the Myr. Then after damage, when state based actions are checked, the game will see that the Elf's toughness is now 0 or lower, and move it to the graveyard as a state-based effect.

If it isn't blocked, it will stay 1/1, and deal 1 damage in the form of 1 poison counter to the defending player.

It only deals damage in poison to players, not creatures.

  1. Ichorclaw Myr gets +2/+2 for being blocked, not for blocking. So it will get the +2/+2 if you are attacking, but not if you are defending.
  2. if your opponent chooses to block with Arbor Elf, Arbor Elf will get the 3 -1/-1 counters. If he does not block, your opponent will get 1 poison counter. Without additional cards, there is no way to deal damage both to your opponent and to the elf with the Myr.

Sorry about the tags - it posted before I had a chance to preview and now I don't know how to edit it :/ (I'm new here)

There is no edit feature, which is why we (I) stress it; it's really hard to fix unclosed tags or improper formatting in original posts. I actually had to edit Devonin's post to close your tags.

Anyway, keep it in mind for future posts. You could get into the habit of immediately closing all your tags at the bottom of your post as you add them.

Yeah I'll type in out in Notepad++ before copy/pasting into new post. That will effectively work as my own "preview" prior to posting. My apologies.
