Imp's Mischief and counter spell

Can I use Imp's Mischief to target itself (Imp's Mischief) when a player casts Cancel to counter Doomblade?I'm not sure if I get the card's rule that states "it cannot target itself". Not sure if it meant "it cannot target Imp's Mischief " or "it cannot target Cancel ". Thanks.

A spell or ability on the stack is an illegal target for itself. You can't cast Imp's Mischief targeting itself. You can, however, cast Imp's Mischief targeting Cancel, then change Cancel's target to Imp's Mischief. Cancel will fizzle because it has an illegal target by the time it would resolve.
