Illusionist's Bracers and Jarad

Asked by jrq1184 12 years ago

So I think I'm reading into the Illusionist Bracers wrong. If Jarad is equipped with Illusionist Bracers and I sac a creature to do damage to all opponents. When the Bracers activate, do I now sac another creature for free to do more damage? or does it copy the original ability so I sac one creature and do the the damage twice?

Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord
Illusionist's Bracers

It will copy the original ability, so, for example, you sacrifice a 3/3 creature. There will be two copies of the ability on the stack, and upon resolution of them both, your opponents will have lost 6 life. Note that loss of life does not equal damage, so you cannot redirect the damage to a planeswalker.

It copy the ability. The sacrifice is part of the cost to pay before the ability is put on the stack.

Awsome, thank you. That's how I thought it was, but I wanted to make sure. A friend was telling me that it just allows you to copy the ability, so I wouldn't have to pay the mana but I would have to sac another creature to deal damage. Which didn't make sense to me why I wouldn't have to pay the mana, but still have to sac a different creature. Thanks for clearing it up.

If Jarad's ability was worded like Deathrite Shaman's, then you would have to sacrifice again. In the case of Deathrite Shaman, you can see that the exile is not part of the cost, but part of the resolution, therefore, as an example, if there is only one creature in a graveyard, then only one ability will be able to resolve, the other will fizzle.
