If my opponent plays an Ixalan's Binding on my Mistblade Shinobi, can I still put into play another Mistblade Shinobi from my hand using the ninjutsu mechanic?

Asked by Jay24 7 years ago

This happened during a casual game with friends, and my opponent did not believed me when I explained to him that "cast" it's not the same as "put", as the Ninjutsu mechanic states. I am positive that a ninja put into play through Ninjutsu it is not casted, just "put", but we weren't 100% sure.Thank you in advance.

That's a legal play.

Ixalan's Binding only stops you from casting a spell with the same name. You can still do anything else with cards with the same name, which includes putting one onto the battlefield with the Ninjutsu ability.

To help your opponent understand a little more, casting a spell is a specific process. In order to cast a spell, the following things must be done:

  • You must declare that you're casting a spell
  • You must pay the mana cost printed in the upper right of the card, or an alternative cost if you have one that applies and wish to use it
  • You must pay any additional costs to casting that're printed on the card
  • You must put the spell on the stack, passing priority around the table before it resolves
