If I set down Whip of Erebos, can i activate it right away?

Asked by AndyReveler 9 years ago

Can I use my whip as soon as it hits the field, or can my opponent just Putrefy it even tho I have priority?

After the Whip spell resolves you get priority again. This means you get to take the next action, not anyone else. Your opponent has to wait until you either do something (like activate the Whip) or pass.

No, that would not happen as described.

It would go.

You cast the whip and it goes to the stack, your opponent now gets priority. If it resolves, then you get priority again and you may activate the ability, then your opponent gets priority with the ability on the stack, he/she may cast Putrefy to destroy the whip, but the ability will resolve anyway.

thanks guys, thats what i thought, kinda like what happens with planeswalkers when they first come down. can they still putrefy in response to the ability being activated? or will it go through either way?

It will go:

The PW will resolve, you get priority, you activate the ability, counters are placed on the walker and the ability goes onto the stack.

Your opponent gets priority, then he/she may cast whatever. If they choose to destroy the walker, then the spell will go on top of the walker's ability.

The spell resolves, kills you walker, then your walker's ability resolves.

Putrefy can't target walkers... but yes, they can respond to the activation... but it will NOT counter or negate the ability's effect.... that is UNLESS the ability resolves and requires the card to still be on the field... like monstrosity does for example :)

i wasnt talking about planeswalkers, i just used it as an example since priority with them came into question as well, but that more or less answers my question. one last thing, i activate whip, get a creature, whip is destroyed, does the creature still get exiled at the end of turn?

Exiling the creature is part of the effect created by the activated ability of the Whip, and destroying the Whip won't change the way it works. The creature will still get exiled.
