If Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh  Flip dies after combat, while already have dealt 3 damage that turn, does she still transform?

Asked by afikolami 9 years ago

On my turn, I ping my opponent with her ability and after that I cast a red spell and after that swing her. My opponent blocks her with a 3/3 creature, killing her. Does she still get to transform?

She will not. She transforms as part of the resolution of her activated ability. The "if Chandra has dealt 3 or more damage" is checked after she deals her 1 damage to a player; not just anytime she deals damage.

So you are forced to only use her ping ability in order to transform her?

Yes. As GreatSword said, the transform effect is built into Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh  Flip's second ability; is it not its own ability. Therefore, it can only happen when the second ability resolves and only if the "if" condition is true at that time.

Even if it were its own triggered ability, if Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh  Flip died at the same time the ability would trigger (or even after the ability triggers, but before it resolves), then Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh  Flip will be in its owner's graveyard before it can transform. It won't return to the battlefield; that's not what the ability instructs you to do.

You are not only forced to use the ping, she can deal damage elsewhere you just must use the ping for the third damage (or higher with tricks)
