i would like to know if nightveil specter has a total devotion of 6 or 3?

in my dimir milling deck I have been told that a nightveil spectre has a devotion of 6. my friends have been telling me that it is only three as it either blue or black. this all contributes towards Phenax, the god of deception. I would like to get an answer so I can tell them whether I was right or they were right.

Phenax will get only 3 devotion from Nightveil Specter. Devotion counts the number of mana symbols, and Nightveil Specter only has 3 mana symbols, so it can provide a max of 3 devotion. Another way to look at it is that Phenax counts the total number of symbols that are black, blue, or black and blue. He does not count your devotion to Black, and then add it to your devotion to Blue.

When calcultaing your devotion to blue and black, you just check each mana symbol if it is blue or black. If the answer is yes to either, that mana symbol provides one devotion. Hybrid mana symbols are only one devotion.

When "devotion to C and D" was introduced, the rules about devotion were clarified to say that a hybrid mana symbol only counts once towards the total. Nightveil Specter contributes 3 to your count of "devotion to blue and black".
