how does Zaxara, the Exemplary interact with multiple x costs?
Asked by cascadien 4 years ago
if i cast, say a hangerback walker or chalice of the void with zaxara out do i get a token for each x in the casting cost? thanks in advance.
ok so just like with Unbound Flourishing then. one other quick question and just to be clear, the token created will have the declared value of each individual x and NOT the total amount of mana actually spent? thanks for the quick reply!

is a placeholder. Often, this is the amount of mana that you pay, but if that payment is reduced/increased somehow, the value of X remains what you declared it as.
I'm glad you brought up Unbound Flourishing. Flourishing will double the value that X is holding. This means that a trigger from Zaxara can reference the doubled value if you decide to stack the triggers in that way.

Sorry to bugger in here long after an answer has been accepted, but I have the same question as Cascadien's original- With Zaxara, the Exemplary on the battlefield, would it's ability trigger twice if a spell with 2 X's in it's cost, such as Chalice of the Void is played? - and don't really see an answer to that.

No its ability wouldn't trigger twice. Thinking about it logically; if you spent 10 mana on Chalice of the Void, to play the card you are supposed to split it into 5 and 5 because you need two separate piles but the x cost is the full 10. If it worked that way then you would just get 2 5/5 hydras instead of the 1 10/10 you do get. I do have a question for those who might have some insight. Would proc Zaxara? Its still and x mana cost

Also if it does proc, then would it be for the reduction cost?

SadistkSuffering if you cast chalice for X = 5, spending 10 mana, Zaxara’s ability will only create a single 5/5 hydra because the value of X was only 5.

Just for future reference, you can surround a card's name with double brackets, "[", in order to link the card image to it. You can do this sitewide.
To your question though, Zaxara only cares that a spell has an in the mana cost. In essence, when you cast a spell, Zaxara will look to see if there is at least one in the mana cost. If there is, there will be a trigger.
Zaxara doesn't care if there are multiple instances of . Once one is found, you'll get one trigger.
Hope this helps!!
