How does Victimize work with Commandeer?

Asked by zandl 11 years ago

I summon the Rules Gods, O Epochalyptik and/or Rhadamanthus!

If my opponent casts Victimize and makes two targets in his graveyard, and I cast Commandeer targeting Victimize , what happens?

Let's say we both have a creature we could sacrifice to it.

When Victimize resolves, it'd resolve as if you casted it, so you'd choose two new targets from your own graveyard, sacrifice a creature you control, and put the targets into the battlefield under your control.

Also, let's assume that both players have plenty of creatures in the graveyard.

Victimize 's Oracle text is
Choose two target creature cards in your graveyard. Sacrifice a creature. If you do, return the chosen cards to the battlefield tapped.

There are two important things:
1) The targets must be in the graveyard of the player who controls Victimize ; otherwise, those targets are illegal.
2) Sacrificing a creature is part of the resolution of the spell; it is not an additional cost.

Commandeer causes you to gain control of target spell, so all instances of "you" and "your" in that spell's text now refer to you, the player who Commandeer ed it. Commandeer also allows you to select new targets, but it doesn't force you to (even if those targets are illegal).

If you select new targets, the only legal targets are creature cards in your own graveyard. Because you can only change a target (even an illegal one) to a legal target, you must choose a legal target if you choose to reselect targets and if a legal target is available.

If you do not select new targets, Victimize will be countered by game rules on resolution for having zero legal targets selected. If you do select new targets, Victimize will resolve, and you will perform the instructed actions, including sacrificing a creature.

Thanks! Awesome response. My friend and I are playing 2HG on DotP 2014 and this situation came up. We weren't sure what would happen, so I wound up not using Commandeer on the opponent's Victimize . I had a creature to sacrifice for the first bit, but nothing in my graveyard.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be surprised if DotP handled this incorrectly.

Actually, as much as I despise the game and the low skill of the average opponent, the game itself has never once incorrectly resolved something.

This was an interesting question, but I don't think it was really "summon-worthy", essentially just being about targets. It's kind of rude to the other users here who would be able to answer the question.

Some would consider it an honor.
