How does using Polukranos, World Eater's monstrosity work?
Asked by BGLENN68 10 years ago
I am confused with how I would have to spend mana to cast this card. I am confused because when I cast Mistcutter Hydra , there is only one "x." But when you go to cast Polukranos, World Eater , there are two "x"'s
Drilnoth, so does this mean that I have to cast enough mana for the X's to be equal? For example, would I not be able to cast 6 total mana for the monstrosity?

X is only equal to one variable, the variable you choose is the amount you pay for each "x" in the mana cost.
You need 3 mana to monstrosity 1. One green source, + x + x = 3. x=1.
5 mana for monstrosity 2, 7 for monstrosity 3, etc.

one forest and x and x is required so pay one green and then one of any color and on of any color. (forest + swamp + forest = +1/+1 counter) or (forest + 10 forests + 10 swamps= +10/+10 counters)

As Drilnoth said, you choose the value of X first. Paying the cost is the last step in casting a spell or activating an ability. The cost is calculated based on your declared X value, not the other way around.
Also, Monstrosity is irrelevant to the casting process. Monstrosity is an activated ability. Activated abilities are activated, not cast.

You choose a value for X. Then, to actually pay for the ability, you have to pay that amount twice. For example, for X to equal 1, you will need to pay three mana (one for the first X, one for the second X, and the one green mana required). For X to equal 2, you need to spend four mana, etc.
