How does sacrifice work
Asked by rrow0485 8 years ago
One player has Sheoldred, Whispering One which makes a player sacrifice a creature at the beginning of other players upkeep. The other player is sacrificing Sakura-Tribe Elder because of sheoldred ability but then in response sacrificing Sakura to retrieve the land out of his deck. Is this legal or does he have to chose one or the other?

@TheFoilAjani: The second to last sentence in your answer is misleading. You can't respond to a sacrifice. You can respond to Sheoldred, Whispering One's ability before it begins to resolve, but once you choose what to sacrifice, you'll be in the middle of the resolution process and you won't have priority to do anything.

The player will only be able to do one. The way the ability works is that the sacrifice to Sheoldred is done when the ability resolves, meaning that players can't activate abilities, cast spells, etc when choosing what to sacrifice. When the player chooses to sacrifice Sakura-Tribe Elder to Sheoldred, they can't then activate the Elder's ability. They can, however, activate the ability in response to the sacrifice. When the ability resolves, the player will have to sacrifice a different creature.
