How does Painful Quandary work with Angel of Jubilation ?

Asked by skadoo23 11 years ago

I was playing a game with my brother and my wife had played 2 Painful Quandary s and a little later on he played an Angel of Jubilation . The way we played it is that he couldn't pay the life when casting a spell so we treated it that he couldn't play a spell unless he had cards to discard for each spell he cast. Did we play the two cards properly or does Angel of Jubilation make it where he doesn't have to pay the life when he plays a spell? Thanks for any help, we were really confused because of the 2nd ruling on Angel of Jubilation , it says "Other things may still cause players to pay life or sacrifice creatures, such as a resolving spell or ability."

Although in a broad sense Painful Quandary 's ability makes it seem like you are paying life to cast a spell, that's not actually what's happening in a literal rules sense.

Painful Quandary has a triggered ability. The ability triggers whenever an opponent casts a spell. Because the life is lost (losing life and paying life are not the same, but we will continue the explanation anyway) as part of the resolution of an ability rather than as part of the casting cost for a spell or activation cost for an ability, Angel of Jubilation 's effect won't prevent it. That's what the ruling references.

You do what exactly what Painful Quandary says. Angel of Jubilation won't let you pay life to cast spells, but Painful Quandary makes you loose life when you do, which is not an additional cost but a triggered ability.

Painful Quandary says you lose life, not pay life. Angel of Jubilation won't have any effect on it. You either discard a card or lose 5 life upon casting a spell for each instance of Painful Quandary on the field you don't control.

The Painful Quandary isn't forcing someone to pay life, but it cause the opponent to lose life unless they discard a card. So when they cast a spell they can discard a card instead of losing the life. The Angel works only when a card says pay life.
