How does morph work??

Asked by belugawhaleonthefloor 10 years ago

So it says you in morph at anytime, so if opponent swings with a 5/5, can I blocked with a 2/2, and then pay mana to flip it into a 1/5?? So basically does it work as a regeneration of such? If not, then will my 1/5 die?

The cost to turn a creature may be played at any time, as long as you have priority. It is a special action, and cannot be responded to.

In your scenario, you can do two things. Declare your 2/2 as a blocker, then morph it face up before damage is assigned, or morph it face up then assign it as a blocker. Either way, it will be a 1/5 when the damage is dealt, and will be dealt lethal damage by the 5/5, and die.

A morph that is turned face-up is still the same object and damage, counters, enchantments, etc. stay on it. So in your example the creature would die.

I hope this helps you altough I don't really unterstand what you mean with "does this work as a regenetion of such"

What I think is meant, is that he wishes to respond to the 5 damage being dealt to his 2/2 by morphing it up.

Someone will more knowledge of the comprehensive rules than myself can confirm this, but I'm pretty sure that can't be done. At the point of damagw actually being dealt, no player has priority, and so morphing the creature face up would not be allowed.

TheHroth yes that's probably what he meant. You're right. That wouldn't work. Since damage dersn't use the stack you can't respond to it.

No player has priority when damage is dealt, so even though morph is a special action and can be at any time, it CANNOT be used as "regeneration". Damage is marked on a creature and flipping right side up does not change how much damage is marked - it is still the same object.

Remember, it is not damage that kills creatures, state-based actions do so.

Boza I know that but you also can't respond to SBA's and they're checked before anybody gets priority and although turning morphs face-up dorsn't use rhe stack you can only do it when you have priority.

I interpret this as "will 2 damage get eaten by the 2/2, and after I morph it, I get a 1/5 with 3 damage marked on it?". This is not the case. Even if you could morph at any time in the literal sense, damage isn't dealt in increments of 1, but all at the same time, so there would be no way to do anything after 2 damage are being dealt, but before the other 3 are.

Also, there is no regeneration or regeneration-like effect in morph.

Basically, you have a creature that can be either face-up or face-down. Morph allows you to play this creature for 3 colorless mana face-down in the first place, and if you did, change the state from face-down to face-up at a later time by paying it's morph cost whenever you have priority (roughly meaning any time you could cast an instant, but you could also respond to split-second spells by unmorphing a creature). You have to choose a point in time to unmorph your morph creature, which may be in the declare blockers step, after blockers have been declared (so before combat damage step). If you choose to do so, you will have a 1/5 face-up creature blocking a 5/5 - if you don't, you have a 2/2 face-down creature blocking a 5/5. As said above, your creature will die either way (assuming it doesn't have additional effects that protect it when turning it face-up).

Guys What I meant by regeneration is like blocking with the 2/2, having it take all 5 damage, then flipping it up before the 2/2 dies, so then it will survive????

No, and there are a few reasons why not.

  1. You must have priority to flip a Morph. The damage is dealt and then before anyone receives priority State-Based Actions are checked the the morph creature is destroyed.

  2. The Morph creature is the same object as far as game rules are concerned so if you block a 1/1 and flip the morph after damage is dealt the face up creature still has 1 damage marked on it until end of turn.
