How does azor, the lawbringer's ability work if flashed in?
Asked by EllNubNub 7 years ago
I recently played a game where someone flashed in azor, the lawbringer on my turn in response to me grabbing a sorcery with eternal witness, he stated that i could not cast instant and sorceries on my current turn, but i pointed out that azor, the lawbringer states on each opponents "next turn". we were unable to come to a conclusion on this ruling because none exist for azor, the lawbringer. and although information may be available online that might give some insight on how this interaction works, we were unable to find any information at all on this. thanks in advance for helping me with this interaction.

The reason you weren't able to find a ruling is because it's handled completely within the card's rules text. "That player's next turn" means that player's next turn. It doesn't mean that player's current turn. The play your opponent was trying to make doesn't work.

If it instead said "opponents can't cast instant or sorcery spells until your next turn" it would work the way your opponent wanted. As worded, it creates an effect that will apply to you during your next turn, not the one currently happening.

for reference, link the cards your talking about - Azor, the Lawbringer.
I really do not understand the source of the confusion. The words "Next turn" clearly specifies that the current turn is not affected in any way by the ability.
