How does Arcanis the Omnipotent's 2nd ability work in Commander/EDH if he's the Commander?

Asked by Joshuawesome 12 years ago

Arcanis the Omnipotent

His 2nd ability reads: "2UU: Return Arcanis the Omnipotent to its owner's hand."

Does he actually go to my hand or back to the Commander zone? Does he cost 2 more to bring back out from wherever??

Your hand is a hidden zone, therefore it would go to your hand. From your hand, he costs what its CMC is, 3UUU

As xkaze said, he'd go to your hand, and you'd cast him from there for 3UUU. A commander's "casting tax" only applies (and ticks up) whenever you cast it from the command zone.

No problem :)

Not sure why you needed to specify that his hand is a hidden zone though.

Devonin, it's just the way I was taught, when a commander is sent to a hidden zone (your hand and library) it must be sent there. If it is sent to the graveyard or exiled (non-hidden zones), you have the option to put it in the command zone instead.

Fair enough. I never learned it with that distinction. It was always just "If it would go to the graveyard or exile, you can put it to the command zone instead" as I learned the rule.

Yea, one of my friends is a rule adviser at my LGS, so when something gets explained in game, it gets explained in detail.

Then that friend should know the rule simply specifies graveyard and exile, and doesn't have anything to do with the "hidden/public" qualities of the zone the Commander would move to.

I realize this, hence the "in detail.."

I dunno, I think "The graveyard or exile" is more detailed than "Hidden zones" but that's just me :P

Incorrect details shouldn't count, at least in my opinion.

I know this is kind of not on topic, but if Kozilek, Butcher of Truth is your commander, he can go to the graveyard. Then, shuffle your graveyard back into your library. This counts as a change in zone, so ke can go back to your command zone.

Not only is it not on topic, it's also 3 years late.
