How do the new flip walkers interact with Mutate (Ex: Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student  Flip and Sea-Dasher Octopus)?

Asked by skoobysnackz 1 month ago

If I mutate the Sea-Dasher Octopus over Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student and then draw three cards in a turn will the tamiyo component flip to be a planeswalker? Would the octopus component keep it as a creature as well? If the card is a planeswalker and a creature how would combat damage affect the planeswalker part if its used to block or gets blocked? Could the planeswalker survive being delt 2 damage if that would kill the creature?

If you flicker a mutate pile, each card in it will return as a seperate creature.

I think this will answer all follow-up questions ;)

So they would come back as separate permanents, but would Tamiyo still transform?

Yes, she would. They pile would get exiled by Tamiyo's ability. She'll be returned as a planeswalker, and each mutation would be returned as a creature.

Sea-Dasher Octopus will not return to the battlefield and will remain in exile. The transform effect will try to return Sea-Dasher Octopus to the battlefield transformed, but since it is a single-face card it cannot and will leave it in exile.

Neotrup's answer is correct due to the following rule (specifically, the second sentence highlighted below in bold). I have changed the "Accepted answer" to reflect this.

712.14a If a spell or ability puts a transforming double-faced card onto the battlefield “transformed” or “converted,” it enters the battlefield with its back face up. If a player is instructed to put a card that isn’t a transforming double-faced card onto the battlefield transformed or converted, that card stays in its current zone.
