Hexproof and Clan Defiance

Asked by Bennycross315 12 years ago

So I cast Clan Defiance targeting my opponent and one of his creatures. In response he cast Simic Charm choosing to give that creature hexproof. It resolved but he said since his creature is now an illegal target, the spell is countered. So my question is; was he correct in that the whole spell was countered or was just that part illegal and the damage to him would still go through?

A spell only fizzles (fizzling is being countered as a state-based actions due to illegal targets) if ALL of its targets are illegal. If some of the targets are still legal, the spell or ability will resolve and do as much as it can. In this case, Clan Defiance would have resolved and dealt damage to your opponent, but not to the creature.

608.2b: ...The spell or ability is countered if all its targets, for every instance of the word target, are now illegal. If the spell or ability is not countered, it will resolve normally. However, if any of its targets are illegal, the part of the spell or abilitys effect for which it is an illegal target cant perform any actions on that target...

Parts of Clan Defiance that still have legal targets will resolve as normal.
