Heartless Summoning and the Undying mechanic

Asked by MickMacHugh2 8 years ago

Just checking here, but if I have Heartless Summoning in play and as well as a creature with undying and 2+ toughness, let's say it's Geralf's Messenger, if GM dies, when undying brings it back, the -1/-1 effect from HS sorts itself out by taking off the +1/+1 counter undying would usually add, right?? So the next time GM dies, he'll have no counter and be able to recur himself yet again. I think that is how that is supposed to work, but I want to be sure before I build a deck around the idea and find out I'm wrong. Thanks guys (and/or gals)!

Unfortunately, this example doesn't work. Only +1/+1 counters and -1/-1 counters can cancel each other out in this way. A +/- effect only uses counters if it specifically says it does, and Heartless Summoning doesn't use counters. It just gives a static -1/-1 effect to all your creatures.
