hardened scales? please explain!!
Asked by xworkoutxfiendx 10 years ago
I was reading hardened scales and the effect says if one or more +1/+1would be placed on a creature you controll that many plus one +1/+1 are placed on it instead. The way I understand it is if you put +2/+2 on a creature it gets two +2/+2 or if I got +3/+3 it would get three +3/+3?? Is that correct???
To spell it out a little bit: If an effect would put 3 +1/+1 counters on a creature, Hardened Scales causes the effect to put 4 +1/+1 counters on it instead. Likewise, 2 +1/+1 counters would result in 3 +1/+1 counters to be placed on the creature.

Note that counters are different from static buffs.
+1/+1, +2/+2, and +3/+3 denote static buffs, as in the kind granted by Giant Growth.
+1/+1 counters will always be denoted as counters. See Battlegrowth.
Hardened Scales's ability only works with counters, which are individual markers. You add one additional counter to the total number of counters that would be placed on the creature you control.

Hardened Scales
It effectively puts N+1 +1/+1 counters on a creature. It only mentions +1/+1 counters, so it's replacement effect only applies to +1/+1 counters.
