Grand Melee, Master of Cruelties and three creatures
Asked by rwillians 11 years ago
I have an example. I have a Master of Cruelties and three creatures. My opponent has a Grand Melee.
Am I forced to only attack with Master, or with the other creatures?
Thanks!
Instead of three, i have the Master and one creature.Who will attack?

Same deal, because you have to attack with the other creature, you can't also attack with Master, so you have to attack with just the other one.
When attacking, you have to fulfill as many requirements as you can, without disobeying any requirements. Attacking with Master and another creature would disobey Master's requirement, so you can't do it. But not attacking with that other creature would disobey Grand Melee 's requirement, so you can't do that either.
508.1c The active player checks each creature he or she controls to see whether it's affected by any restrictions (effects that say a creature can't attack, or that it can't attack unless some condition is met). If any restrictions are being disobeyed, the declaration of attackers is illegal.
508.1d The active player checks each creature he or she controls to see whether it's affected by any requirements (effects that say a creature must attack, or that it must attack if some condition is met). If the number of requirements that are being obeyed is fewer than the maximum possible number of requirements that could be obeyed without disobeying any restrictions, the declaration of attackers is illegal. If a creature can't attack unless a player pays a cost, that player is not required to pay that cost, even if attacking with that creature would increase the number of requirements being obeyed.

A legal attack maximizes the requirements being fulfilled without violating any restrictions. In the original situation, the three other creatures must attack, because that fulfills a greater number of requirements (3) than attacking with Master of Cruelties alone (1).
In the situation where you only control Master of Cruelties and one other creature, you can pick which one you attack with. For this situation, attacking with either the Master or the other creature fulfills the maximum possible number of requirements (1) and doesn't violate the restriction (Master can only attack alone).

Grand Melee forces you to declare all of your creatures as attackers, if they are able to attack. Master of Cruelties has a restriction that it can only be declared as an attacker by itself. So your only option is to attack with all of your creatures except Master of Cruelties . If you didn't have the other creatures, then you would have to attack with Master of Cruelties .
