Goblin Electromancer and Fuse ability

Asked by graft 12 years ago

If I have Goblin Electromancer and I want to use the fuse ability on the new split cards, such as Turn/Burn:

I assume Goblin Electromancer would reduce the total cost from 2UR to 1UR, but can anyone confirm this? It would be incredible if he reduced the cost to UR but that seems unlikely. The WotC Dragon's Maze Mechanics page isn't clear about this.

Jeez I read the original costs wrong. Would gobbo reduce the cost from 3UR to 2UR? Or would it be 1UR? Damn lack of an edit button.

Since it's combining both "halves" into a single spell, I'd guess the mana cost would be reduced from 3RU to 2RU.

Fuse even says you "cast one or both halves." They don't become a single casted spell, instead each is an individual cast spell placed on the stack.

I would assume Goblin Electromancer would reduce EACH cost by 1, making the cost to cast both 1UR.

Fuse reads "You may cast one or both halves of this card from your hand" so you are treating them both as separate spells, so anything that modifies the cost of spells would modify each half.

The electromancer will reduce the costs to 1U, and R respectively.

Not sure about that. From the mechanics article:

"you have the additional option to cast both halves as a single spell by paying their combined cost...So if you have Toil & Trouble in your hand, you have three options: You can pay 2B to cast Toil; you can pay 2R to cast Trouble; or you can pay 4BR to cast Toil & Trouble as a single spell...If you cast both halves of Toil & Trouble, it's a black and red spell."

If it were two separate spells, each paid for separately, then he'd reduce the cost by 2. But one spell, one cost reduction!

Ah didn't see that element of the mechanics. I was going by what was printed on the card.

It makes sense that a mechanic called 'Fuse' is going to combine the costs into one spell. After all, if they were separate spells, and say, you cast Toil and Trouble, and then Toil got Remand ed, you'd get to magically get Trouble back in your hand as well.

Until the release, and the formal update to the comprehensive rules, the mechanics article minscandboo referenced seems like the authority on the subject, and Goblin Electromancer would reduce the combined spell from 3UR to 2UR

Ah, man, that's upsetting. I really want Goblin Electromancer to be more useful. ;~;
