Goad vs Planeswalkers. Also Goad vs Planeswalkers of the player that goaded said creature.

Asked by Supersaulty 1 year ago

I am told goaded creatures can attack planeswalkers (which sounds righ to me). What doesn't sound right to me is that I'm being told a creature I goaded can attack a Planeswalker I control. Is this true. Please include rule citation if possible. Thank you very much.

Goaded creatures generally cannot attack any planeswalkers, which would include yours.

Rule 701.38b reads "Goaded is a designation a permanent can have. A goaded creature attacks each combat if able and attacks a player other than the controller of the permanent, spell, or ability that caused it to be goaded if able. Goaded is neither an ability nor part of the permanent’s copiable values.

Um, thank you, but nowhere in that ruling does it state that a goaded creature can not attack a planeswalker...

A planeswalker is not considered a player by the game, so since the rule specifies 'attacks a player if able' and not 'attacks if able', it can't attack a planeswalker.

From the MTGwiki page on goad: "A goaded creature has to attack a player (not a planeswalker)" (Source: https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Goad)

To be clear: the key thing here is the "if able" part. If there's some reason that the goaded creature can't attack any players other than the one who goaded it (e.g. they all have Teferi's Moat or something similar), then it's allowed to either attack the goading player or attack a planeswalker. If it's allowed to attack any of those other players, then it has to attack one of them.

Delphen7 planeswalkers ARE considered players. If they weren't then explain to me how i can declare attackers on a non-player.

Planeswalkers are not players, but can still be attacked because the rules explicitly allow them to be attacked directly. Player only refers to the actual humans playing the game. Here are the relevant rules:

102.1. A player is one of the people in the game. The active player is the player whose turn it is. The other players are nonactive players.

306.6. Planeswalkers can be attacked. (See rule 508, “Declare Attackers Step.”)

508.1b If the defending player controls any planeswalkers, or the game allows the active player to attack multiple other players, the active player announces which player or planeswalker each of the chosen creatures is attacking.
