Genesis Wave, X is unclear
Asked by crabopolis 11 years ago
So when i cast Genesis Wave for we will say x = 10. As i look at the reavealed 10 cards, i can put any number of permanents with converted mana cost X or less into play. Does that mean an individual bases, each permanent must be 10 or less so i could play 10 permanents each with a casting cost of up to 10, or the total of permanents i choose to put into play must be equal or less than 10. I.E. 5 lands, a 6 drop, a 3 drop, a 1 drop, and the last 2 are abandoned because i ran out of mana. In my meta we play it as the first option.

Let's say you cast Genesis Wave for ten. You reveal the top 10 cards of your library. Among those 10 cards revealed, you can put any number of permanent cards with a CMC of 10 or less onto the battlefield, You then put the rest in your graveyard. If all 10 cards revealed are permanents with a CMC of 10 or less, you can very well put them all onto the battlefield.

For an example of an effect that does care about the total CMC of all the cards together, see Protean Hulk . You can see that it's written differently than Genesis Wave , specifically mentioning the "total converted mana cost".

Any of those X cards with X or less CMC. So essentially, you can play everything if the CMC is less than 10 when X=10, including lands.
