Gargos, Vicious Watcher Triggers

Asked by Podma101 4 years ago

I am curious about how often Gargos will trigger when using spells that target multiple creatures. For example, Biogenic Upgrade and Bounty of Might allow me to target more than one creature (the latter can also target a single creature more than once). Let's say I target three creatures, will Gargos trigger for each creature targeted, or only once since it is one spell?

I also wanted to confirm that Gargos will NOT trigger from creatures with EtB effects, since they are permanents on the field rather than spells on the stack when the target is placed on the stack, correct?

For reference for others since the card isn't in the database at this time, Gargos, Vicious Watcher has an ability that reads "Whenever a creature you control becomes the target of a spell, Gargos, Vicious Watcher fights up to one target creature you don't control."

The way this is worded, each creature being targeted will trigger Gargos, so if you target three creatures with Biogenic Upgrade , Gargos will trigger three times, since you have three instances of a creature you control becoming the target of a spell. Bounty of Might will also trigger Gargos three times, even if you choose the same creature for all three targets, again because it's three separate instances of a creature becoming a target of a spell.

Gargos only triggers for spells. It does not trigger for abilities, and EtB effects are abilities, not spells.

The damage is dealt simultaneously, and it is dealt by the creatures themselves, so abilities like deathtouch, lifelink, and infect will work as normal. Damage dealt while fighting is not combat damage, so abilities like first strike won't have any effect. Fighting itself does not cause the creatures to become tapped.[1] Only creatures can fight. No more than two creatures can fight. If a creature somehow fights itself, it will deal damage to itself equal to its power twice simultaneously.
