Frantic Search and the timing on paying Miracle costs

Asked by Phobophile 11 years ago

it is my opponent's end step, i have three untapped lands.

i cast Frantic Search .

the first card i draw is a Temporal Mastery . i reveal it with the intention of casting it for its miracle cost.at this point all my lands are tapped, but they will untap once frantic search finishes resolving.

to the best of my knowledge, no one gets priority in the middle of a spell resolving. my question is, do i have to pay for Temporal Mastery in the middle of Frantic Search , or do i get to pay the mana for the miracle cost once i receive priority, namely after Frantic Search finishes resolving, and my lands are untapped from the spells effect?

Miracle represents both a triggered ability and an alternate cost. You only pay the alternate cost after the triggered ability. The triggered ability isn't even put onto the stack until Frantic Search finishes resolving. You'll pay for it after your lands untap.

Miracle is a triggered ability, and you don't even have to decide whether or not you want to cast the miracle card until the triggered ability resolves.

The Miracle ability will go onto the stack after Frantic Search finishes resolving, and you pay the miracle cost as the triggered ability resolves.

702.92. Miracle

702.92a Miracle is a static ability linked to a triggered ability (see rule 603.10). Miracle [cost] " means You may reveal this card from your hand as you draw it if its the first card youve drawn this turn. When you reveal this card this way, you may cast it by paying [cost] rather than its mana cost.

702.92b If a player chooses to reveal a card using its miracle ability, he or she plays with that card revealed until that card leaves his or her hand, that ability resolves, or that ability otherwise leaves the stack.
