Flipped Enchantments/Creatures

Asked by mozerdozer 13 years ago

I know that this is literally one of the example questions, but I searched for both Zur the Enchanter and Erayo's Essence: Can Zur search for a creature/enchantment and put it into play as the enchantment, such as putting Erayo's Essence into play.

Secondly, can a creature/legendary creature be chosen as your EDH General? If so, how do you play him from the command zone? An example is Autumn-Tail, Kitsune Sage .

I'll be addressing your second question.

First of all, EDH isn't set in stone. It's now mentioned in the official comprehensive rules, but it's a format made by players. Any rules discrepancies are up to you and your playgroup to decide, which can be a lot of fun. That being said, I can tell you what I would say if someone in my playgroup asked my this question.

You can indeed have a flip legend from Kamigawa as your commander, but only if it is a legend in it's un-flipped state, meaning you cannot use Autumn-Tail, Kitsune Sage as your commander, unless you are using non-legendary creatures as commanders, in which case you may use Kitsune Mystic . You can use Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant or similar cards, if you want. You can play it from your command zone just like any other commander, but you must satisfy the requirements to flip it. Hope that helps :)

No you can not search him out because until it if on the battlefield, and flipped, it is not an enchantment.

This rule highlights this:

709.2. In every zone other than the battlefield, and also on the battlefield before the permanent flips, a flip card has only the normal characteristics of the card. Once a permanent is flipped, its normal name, text box, type line, power, and toughness dont apply and the alternative versions of those characteristics apply instead.

Example: Akki Lavarunner is a nonlegendary creature that flips into a legendary creature named Tok-Tok, Volcano Born. An effect that says search your library for a legendary card cant find this flip card. An effect that says legendary creatures get +2/+2 doesnt affect Akki Lavarunner, but it does affect Tok-To

Same goes for commander, If it is not legendary before it's flipped it can't be a commander.

Now. Bonus points go to the first perosn that can explain to me how to properly use Curse of the Fire Penguin .

I could be wrong, but this is how I understood Curse of the Fire Penguin .

You enchant a creature with said curse. It turns into a 6/5 with trample. When the enchanted creature dies, you enchant another creature with the curse. Hope it helps, although it seems weird as hell.

Try to figure it out, card:Ashnod's Coupon should give you time to do so.

"Confuse" is a reference to the Pokemon TCG in which confused creatures get flipped upside down. Since your Curse of the Fire Penguin will be on top of that creature, it turns into a 6/5 Trample Penguin which - if killed - will return to your hand as Curse of the Fire Penguin .

To be exact: It will not be on top of the enchanted creature....it consumes it. Spoken in Rules: the enchanted Creature goes to the graveyard, then Curse of the Fire Penguin is flipped.
