Fleecemane Lion vs. Zealous Persecution + damage
Asked by SteelNinja 11 years ago
If my opponent attacks with a monstrous Fleecemane Lion and I block with an Anaconda , what would happen if I:
a) Cast Zealous Persecution
before damage?
b) Cast Zealous Persecution
after damage?

If you cast before damage, then your Anaconda lives. If you cast it after, then the Anaconda will already be dead. Fleecemane Lion won't die because it has indestructible.

Short answers:
- Living lion and snake.
- Living lion, dead snake.
Long answers:
- Let's say, at the last possible opportunity (the declare blockers step) you cast the Persecution, and it resolves. Your opponent's Lion is a 3/3 with indestructible, and your snake is a 4/4. Damage occurs simultaneously. Your snake is a 4/4 with 3 damage marked on it, so it lives. Your opponent's lion is a 3/3 with indestructible and 3 damage marked on it, so it lives.
- Lion is a 4/4 indestructible, snake is a 3/3. Damage occurs simultaneously. Lion is a 4/4 with 3 damage marked on it and indestructible, so it lives. Your snake is a 3/3 with 3 damage marked on it, so before anyone has priority and can cast spells, State-Based actions check and your snake dies. If you still cast the Persecution, your opponent's Lion is a 3/3 with indestructible and 3 damage marked on it, so it lives.

a) Fleecemane Lion would be a 3/3 and Anaconda would be a 4/4 so nothing would die.
b) Fleecemane Lion would be a 3/3 with 3 damage marked on it but be indestructible while Anaconda would be dead because state based actions would be checked before you could cast Zealous Persecution
You won't be able to kill Fleecemane Lion because damage doesn't reduce toughness. So the end result will be a 3/3 Fleecemane Lion with Hexproof, indestructible and three damage marked on it.
TL;DR- Cast it before combat if you want Anaconda to survive and Fleecemane Lion will not die either way.
