First strike trample blocked by first strike and normal creatures?
Asked by eeuhln 13 years ago
I was playing an ally with against a werewolf deck, and the following scenario ensued.
1) I have 2 untapped allies, and an untapped Kruin Outlaw.
2) He swings with village ironsmith and pumps with Kessig Wolf Run.
3) I declare all three of my untapped allies and the Kruin Outlaw as my blockers.
Now, since the trampling Vilage Ironsmith is killed in first strike, would the trample damage still hit me or would it only make it to the other 3 creatures? Now that I am writing this out, I also wonder if if would even make it to the other 3 due to the way that I was lead to interpret trample seeing as how it did not assign lethal damage to all creatures, it could not hit me, and I know that logically, if it dies in first strike, it would not damage the other monsters.

Village Ironsmith Flip Flip, Kessig Wolf Run ,Kruin Outlaw Flip Flip
because the ironsmith has first strike as well he will get to assign combat damage before he dies. he could choose not to mark kruin outlaw with combat damage and just kill your allies if he wanted to. for the combat damage to trample over to you he would have to be able to assign more than enough combat damage to kill your creatures. say your creatures had a total toughness of 5 the ironsmith would have to deal at least 6 damage for it to even trample over to you.

You are correct that he would have to assign lethal damage to all creatures blocking Village Ironsmith Flip Flip
to assign any damage to you. From the MTG Comprehensive Rulebook:
702.18b The controller of an attacking creature with trample first assigns damage to the creature(s)blocking it. Once all those blocking creatures are assigned lethal damage, any remaining damage is assigned as its controller chooses among those blocking creatures and the player or planeswalker the creature is attacking. When checking for assigned lethal damage, take into account damage already marked on the creature and damage from other creatures thats being assigned during the same combat damage step, but not any abilities or effects that might change the amount of damage thats actually dealt. The attacking creatures controller need not assignlethal damage to all those blocking creatures but in that case cant assign any damage to the player or planeswalker its attacking.
First strike is irrelevant in this situation because he still must assign lethal damage to all creatures he is blocked by. However, he would still get to assign damage to all creatures blocking Village Ironsmith Flip Flip
as he liked during the first combat step.
